Wegovy is a medication that contains semaglutide, which belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. It's mainly prescribed to manage weight in adults with obesity or overweight people who have weight-related health conditions. Semaglutide mimics a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate the release of insulin when you eat. This helps to control your blood sugar levels. It's taken via injection and is shown to be effective at supporting weight loss alongside lifestyle changes.

Individual results with Wegovy (semaglutide) can vary significantly. In clinical trials, people using Wegovy experienced substantial weight loss, with averages ranging from 12-15% of their body weight over the course of the trials.

Your weight loss can be influenced by various factors, including individual responses to the medication, consistency with treatment, lifestyle changes, metabolic differences and overall health. Some people might experience more significant weight loss, while others may see more moderate changes..

Common side effects of Wegovy may include gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, particularly when starting treatment. You might also experience injection site reactions, and, rarely, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). To manage nausea, individuals can try getting fresh air, sipping cold drinks, and consuming small, frequent meals.

Science behind wegovy

The science behind Wegovy

The main active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide, which operates by mimicking the action of the natural GLP-1 gut hormone.

Wegovy works to decrease your appetite and increase feelings of fullness by influencing the brain's reward centre and by slowing gastric emptying.

These biological changes make it easier to implement lifestyle changes like dietary modifications and regular exercise.

Weogvy FAQs

Wegovy is an injectable medication that comes in a pre-filled pen which needs to be administered once a week at around the same time. You can choose to inject the medication into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm but the pen itself is simple to use and the needles are very small, so it's relatively pain-free and easy to get used to.

You'll receive clear instructions with your first order on the specifics for administering your treatment confidently. Our team are also on hand to answer any questions you might have about the process.

We’re here to support you throughout your weight loss journey, offering tips to help you manage side effects and providing reassurance if you have any concerns.

While Wegovy has helped many people reach their health goals, it’s crucial to understand what to watch for along the way. Below, we’ve outlined the most common and rare side effects, along with guidance on when to seek help.

Very common

These side effects may occur in more than 1 in 10 people and usually go away over time. They are most common when first starting Wegovy and when increasing the dose.

  • Examples: feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, headache, fatigue.

Common

These side effects may occur in up to 1 in 10 people.

  • Examples: dizziness, indigestion, heartburn, bloating, burping, flatulence, injection site reactions (redness, swelling), gallstones, allergic reaction (e.g., rash, itching, and eczema), low blood pressure, hair loss, changes in sense of touch, changed sense of taste, gastritis.

In patients with type 2 diabetes, rapid improvements in blood sugar control can temporarily worsen diabetic eye disease (retinopathy), a common side effect of Wegovy. If you have this condition and notice eye problems while taking Wegovy, contact your GP or call 111 for advice.

Uncommon

These side effects may occur in up to 1 in 100 people.

  • Examples: kidney stones, increased heart rate, and low blood sugar (also known as hypoglycaemia).
  • Hypoglycaemia can occur in people without type 2 diabetes, and patients should look out for symptoms such as feeling hungry, dizzy, tired, weak, confused, anxious or irritable, sweating, shaking, tingling lips, heart palpitations, or blurred vision. Contact your GP or call 111 for advice if these symptoms occur.
  • SERIOUS: pancreatitis. This is inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe stomach pain which can radiate to your back that doesn’t go away. Most patients feel very ill with pancreatitis and may present with severe vomiting that does not settle. You should call 999 or attend A&E right away if you experience these symptoms.

Rare

These side effects may occur in up to 1 in 1000 people.

  • SERIOUS: severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). This can present as difficulty breathing, swelling of lips, tongue and/or throat, difficulty swallowing, rapid heartbeat. You should call 999 or attend A&E right away if you experience these symptoms.

If you have any questions about side effects or how to manage them, the Levity clinical team is here to support you.

Wegovy is an injectable weight loss medication suitable for people with a BMI of ≥ 30, or for people with a BMI ≥ 27 in the presence of a weight-related health concern such as high blood pressure, prediabetes or high cholesterol.

Wegovy is also suitable for people with a BMI of ≥ 27 and established heart disease, to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events such as a heart attack, stroke, or death from heart disease.

If you have type 2 diabetes and a BMI less than 27, we can’t prescribe you Wegovy for weight loss.

Yes. A major clinical trial found that Wegovy reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and death from heart disease by up to 20% in people with overweight or obesity and pre-existing heart disease — even if they don’t have diabetes.

Wegovy can support heart health by:

  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Reducing ‘bad’ cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Improving ‘good’ cholesterol
  • Reducing inflammation, a key driver of heart disease
  • Promoting weight loss, which reduces strain on the heart

People with overweight or obesity that have pre-existing heart disease

For example, if you are living with overweight or obesity (BMI ≥ 27), and have previously had a heart attack, a stroke or poor blood flow to the limbs, you may be eligible for treatment.

Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy.

If you are planning to become pregnant, discontinue Wegovy at least two months in advance.

If you are of childbearing age and sexually active, you should use contraception while taking Wegovy. You can use oral contraceptive pills, non-oral methods such as the implant or IUD, or barrier methods like condoms.

Wegovy does not impact the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill.

As Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy, women of childbearing age should use effective contraception whilst using Wegovy. This includes the oral contraceptive pill, condoms or non-barrier methods.

If you experience severe diarrhoea that lasts for over 24 hours, or vomiting within three hours of taking your oral contraceptive pill, you may need a repeat dose of your oral contraceptive pill. Contact your GP or call 111 for medical advice if this occurs.

If you experience persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, consider using a non-oral contraception method. Contact your GP to discuss your options.

If you are planning to become pregnant, it is recommended that you wait at least two months after your last dose of Wegovy to begin trying.

Wegovy should not be used while breastfeeding. While we don’t know for sure how Wegovy could affect a breastfed baby, a risk can’t be ruled out.
