Weight loss medication

Based on several clinical studies, the medications that Levity offers can help you to lose up to 20% of your body weight in a year combined with diet and exercise.

  • Clinical trials of Mounjaro (a GIP/GLP-1 medication) show it can help you lose on average up to 20% of your body weight in one year.
  • Clinical trials of Wegovy (a GLP-1 medication), in people without diabetes, show it can help you lose on average up to 15% of your body weight in one year.

Levity offers several injectable treatments, which are proven to be highly effective for sustainable weight loss.

We offer GLP-1 medications like Wegovy® and GIP/GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro®.

These medications work by mimicking natural gut hormones that signal your brain to reduce appetite, enhance metabolism and improve digestion, which causes prolonged fullness and better nutrient absorption.

All our medications are clinically validated and can support your weight loss journey. Your Levity clinical reviewer will determine the most suitable option for you.

Mild or moderate side effects? These are usually symptoms like mild nausea or a minor headache that don’t stop you from going about your day and often improve over time.

Severe or worrying side effects? If you experience any of the following, stop taking your medication immediately.

  • Severe, persistent stomach pain
    • Severe means:
      • It’s so intense (around 8 or more out of 10) that you can’t focus on anything else
      • It makes it nearly impossible to handle normal daily tasks (like walking, getting dressed, or eating)
      • It doesn’t improve with over-the-counter pain relief or rest
      • It radiates to your back or underneath your right ribcage or your right shoulder
      • You also have severe vomiting (3 or more times a day, or having coffee grounds or blood in vomit)
    • These symptoms could indicate pancreatitis, a serious condition that requires urgent medical attention.
  • Difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
    • These could be signs of a severe allergic reaction, which can be life-threatening.
  • Severe pain underneath your right ribcage that may spread to your shoulder or back
    • This may be accompanied by vomiting, a high temperature or a rapid heartbeat.
    • These symptoms could suggest acute gallbladder problems.

If you notice any of these symptoms, call 999 or head to A&E right away.

If you have any questions about side effects or how to manage them, the Levity clinical team is here to support you.

Side effects can vary from person to person, but they’re most common when you first start Mounjaro or Wegovy or when your dose increases.

The good news is that mild side effects usually settle down within a few days to a couple of weeks, as your body adjusts to the medication. If you are experiencing more troublesome or lingering side effects, please contact us for further support.

When you increase your dose, side effects can sometimes reappear or worsen. This is simply because your body needs time to adjust to the higher dose. The good news is that these usually improve over time.

Some people may notice a lump or mild swelling at the injection site. This is usually harmless and should resolve on its own.

Rotating your injection site and using proper technique can help minimise irritation.

If a lump at the injection site persists, worsens or becomes painful, please contact your GP.

It’s important to remember that the uncomfortable but common side effects tend to improve with time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Contact us for advice on adjusting your dose — our experts might advise you to remain on a lower dose for longer.

You can report any side effect you experience through the government Yellow Card Scheme.

Mounjaro:

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible within 4 days. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on the usual day.
  • Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
  • If you’ve missed multiple doses, contact us to discuss restarting your treatment.

Wegovy:

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on the usual day.
  • Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
  • If you’ve missed multiple doses, contact us to discuss restarting your treatment.

If you become unwell with the cold or flu while taking weight loss medication like Wegovy or Mounjaro, treat your illness as you normally would — stay hydrated, rest and take over-the-counter medications like cold and flu tablets if needed.

Because these medications can increase the risk of dehydration, make sure to drink extra fluids — even more than you normally would — especially if you have a fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.

If you are experiencing severe diarrhoea that lasts longer than a few days, or vomiting that prevents you from keeping down food or fluids, you should stop taking your weight loss medication and call 111 for medical advice. Make sure you tell the healthcare provider that you have been taking weight loss medication.

It is important to remember that weight loss with medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro is a gradual process.

These medications begin working soon after your first dose by reducing appetite and regulating blood sugar levels. They stay in the body for about a week, which is why they are taken once weekly. To minimise side effects and help your body adjust, the dose is increased gradually every four weeks in a process called titration.

While some people may experience weight loss within the first few weeks, Wegovy and Mounjaro are designed as long-term treatments for obesity, rather than quick fixes. Weight loss is more likely to be steady over many months, and everyone’s journey will be different — so don’t worry if your results aren’t immediate.

Clinical trials show that you can lose up to 15–20% of your body weight, but this can take over a year.

Be sure to reassess your lifestyle to make sure you are in a calorie deficit. This is when you burn more calories than you consume, and is key for weight loss.

If you’ve been taking your medication for several weeks and haven’t noticed any changes in appetite or weight, please contact us to discuss further.

If your current dose is working and you’re happy with your progress, you can stay on that dose.

You start on the lowest dose of weight loss medication, which usually increases every 4 weeks. If you’re experiencing side effects or you’re satisfied with your current weight loss, you can stay on a lower dose.

You always have the option to increase your dose when you feel ready.

If you’re scheduled for surgery requiring general anaesthesia, please mention during your pre-operative assessment that you’re taking a GLP-1 medication (e.g. Mounjaro or Wegovy). Also, contact us so we can update your records.

GLP-1 injectable pens are suitable for individuals with a BMI above 30 or for people with a BMI over 27 who have weight related health concerns like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and raised cholesterol.

Pregnancy and contraception

Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy.

If you are planning to become pregnant, discontinue Wegovy at least two months in advance.

If you are of childbearing age and sexually active, you should use contraception while taking Wegovy.

You can use oral contraceptive pills, non-oral methods such as the implant or IUD, or barrier methods like condoms.

Wegovy does not impact the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill.

As Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy, people of childbearing age should use effective contraception whilst using Wegovy. This includes the oral contraceptive pill, condoms or non-barrier methods.

If you experience severe diarrhoea that lasts for over 24 hours, or vomiting within three hours of taking your oral contraceptive pill, you may need a repeat dose of your oral contraceptive pill. Contact your GP or call 111 for medical advice if this occurs.

If you experience persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, consider using a non-oral contraception method. Contact your GP to discuss your options.

If you are planning to become pregnant, it is recommended that you wait at least two months after your last dose of Wegovy to begin trying.

Wegovy should not be used while breastfeeding. While we don’t know for sure how Wegovy could affect a breastfed baby, a risk can’t be ruled out.

Mounjaro should not be used during pregnancy. If you are planning to become pregnant, discontinue Mounjaro at least one month in advance.

If you are of childbearing age and sexually active, you should use contraception while taking Mounjaro.

As Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of your oral contraceptive pill, you must use an additional barrier form of contraception, such as condoms, or switch to a non-oral method such as an IUD or implant.

Recent research has shown that Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of your oral contraceptive pill. This could increase the risk of an unplanned pregnancy.

To stay protected, you must use an additional barrier form of contraception, such as condoms, or switch to a non-oral method such as an IUD or implant while using Mounjaro.

If you experience severe diarrhoea that lasts for over 24 hours, or vomiting within three hours of taking your oral contraceptive pill, you may need a repeat dose of your oral contraceptive pill. Contact your GP or call 111 for medical advice if this occurs.

If you experience persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, consider a non-oral method of contraception. Contact your GP to discuss your options.

If you are planning on becoming pregnant, it is recommended that you wait at least one month before your last dose of Mounjaro before trying.

If you are planning to become pregnant, it is recommended that you wait at least one month after your last dose of Mounjaro before trying.

No, we advise patients to not use Mounjaro while breastfeeding. It is not yet known whether Mounjaro passes into breast milk, so the risk to a breast fed baby can’t be ruled out.

The science behind GLP-1s

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists mimics and enhance the effects of GLP-1, a hormone produced in your body. They work primarily by influencing your brain to reduce "food noise" — those persistent thoughts about eating - which helps decrease snacking and overall food intake.

They also:
  • Regulate blood sugar levels
  • Slow down digestion
  • Increase feelings of fullness

Dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and GLP-1 receptor agonist more commonly called GIP/GLP-1 agonists act on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors.

Like GLP-1 agonists they affect the brain to reduce food cravings and intake. Additionally, they enhance insulin secretion and improve insulin sensitivity, making them particularly effective for blood sugar control.

Both medications have systemic effects, but their impact on brain signalling related to hunger and satiety is a key factor in their effectiveness for weight management.
